Great flight offers appear all the time, but there are certain times in advance of a trip when ticket rates are often the lowest. It is 1-3 months before a domestic vacation and 2-8 months before an overseas trip, and this is when we recommend you purchase your aircraft tickets. If you’re planning a trip during peak travel season, or if your travel dates are set in stone and you can’t change them, we recommend adding a few months to the calculation. Anyone intending to fly during the Christmas season, for example, should book around July, and those planning a summer vacation should book the summer before. Also, keep in mind that last-minute bargain basement fares are uncommon. Airlines often raise costs 21, 14, and 7 days before a flight, so book as early as possible.
Consider flying from another airport
Most of us are used to looking for airfare prices from the airport nearest to our house, which makes great sense. It may seem strange for us to recommend shopping for inexpensive rates at airports that aren’t close by, but this is sometimes exactly what might save you a lot of money on flights.
If you’re in Norfolk and want to go to LAX. You might see fares as cheap as $290 and decide to take the risk. But, before you hit the buy button, zoom out on the map a little. Even if you add a $50 round-trip rail ticket from Norfolk to DC, you’ll still be ahead because flights from DC to Los Angeles typically cost $110 or less.
Keep your vacation arrangements flexible
The greatest approach to save money on a flight is to book during periods of year when flights are normally cheaper. It sounds straightforward, yet it can be more difficult than you think. Peak travel seasons are popular for a reason, and most of us find ourselves with fewer options for when we may go on vacation. If you can stay flexible, shopping for the cheapest flights and letting that decide when you travel, you might save a lot of money.
If you have no option but to go during the peak season, or if your travel dates are set, there are still a few things you may do to save some money. The first two weeks of June and the final two weeks of August are the best times to search for fares. These are often cheaper than the remainder of the busy summer season. Second, avoid flying on the most expensive days (Fridays and Sundays) and instead choose the less expensive days (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays).
